What is Klarna?

Klarna is a Swedish fintech company that provides online financial services. The company was originally founded in 2005. It operates in 26 countries and partners with over 600,000 merchants[1]. It is widely known for its ‘buy now, pay later’ (BNPL) where it allows consumers to make purchases and defer payments offering flexible financing solutions for shoppers.

What is the stock market?

The stock market is a place where securities like stocks, bonds and other financial instruments are bought and sold. The stock market is a system which connects companies in need of capital with investors who are willing to exchange this for potential future returns in the form of shares which change in value along with the company[2]. The stock market is a dynamic environment meaning that asset prices constantly change and returns are not always guaranteed.

What difficulties are Klarna facing?

Klarna has faced some difficulties this year due to having losses of a massive $53 million across April to June, up from the $18 million in 2024. Following this, Klarna was due to enter a big market stock deal called an Initial Public Offering (IPO). Many people had assumed that that the losses were a result of people not clearing their loans however, it was due to Donald Trump’s new tariffs which caused problems due to the IPO deal being paused.

IPO is the process by which a private company offers shares to the public for the first time, meaning that there is a transition from private to public ownership. There is an offering of a sale portion of its ownership through newly issued shares, enabling public investors to purchase equity and allowing its stock to trade on a public exchange[3].

Is Klarna joining the stock market?

Klarna announced that they were entering the stock market on the 2nd of September 2025. The stock market that Klarna had entered raised $1.37 billion in selling shares alongside some longtime investors for $40 per share[4]. The shares had opened for trading at around $52 per share surging 30% from the IPO price which had valued the firm at $15 billion to more than $19 billion[5].

Klarna’s shares had drifted lower by the end of the day and settling around $46 and putting the firm’s value at $17 billion. The company continues to trade at a discount compared to in 2021 when an investment by another firm put the value of the firm at more than $45 billion.

This is a big move for Klarna and definitely an interesting stock to watch.
