What Does it take to apply for a skilled worker visa?

Skilled Worker Visa

A Skilled Worker Visa allows you to work and reside in the UK to carry out an eligible job with an approved employer.

Eligibility

The criteria for the Skilled Worker visa must be that you work for a UK employer that has been approved by the Home Office, and can issue a "Certificate of Sponsorship" (CoS) to carry out a role that is on the list of eligible occupations and be paid a minimum salary - your salary depends on the type of work you do and the date you got your CoS.

To qualify or to apply for a Skilled Worker visa, you will need the following:

• Provide proof of your knowledge of English.  You must be able to speak, read, write and understand English.  You will usually need to prove your knowledge of English when you make your application.
• A valid passport or other document that shows your identity and nationality.
• Your Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) reference number and the Sponsor Licence Number (SLN), which will be on your Certificate of Sponsorship.  Your employer will provide you with this.
• Your job's occupation code - we can assist you with finding this; and
• Your job title and annual salary.
• Effective from April 4, 2024, the minimum salary requirement for most Skilled Worker Visa applicants has increased to £38,700 per year or the "going rate" for the specific job, whichever is higher. This represents a substantial rise from the previous threshold of £26,200.
• PhD Holders: Applicants with a relevant PhD face a threshold of £34,830, while those with STEM-related PhDs require a salary of £30,960.

Shortage Occupations and New Entrants: Jobs on the shortage occupation list and roles for new entrants now require a salary of £30,960, with the previous 20% discount for shortage roles removed.

Immigration Salary List (ISL)

• The Shortage Occupation List is being replaced by a new Immigration Salary List (ISL), informed by a review carried out by the independent Migration Advisory Committee (MAC).
• Discount for Occupations: Included occupations will receive a 20% discount to the general salary threshold (to £30,960 or £23,200, depending on whether they are subject to the £38,700 or £29,000 threshold). However, the previous 20% discount to the going rate requirement is being removed.

From 4 April, eligible asylum seekers granted permission to work in the UK will be limited to roles on the new Immigration Salary List, replacing the previous Shortage Occupation List.

From December 31, 2024, employers are prohibited from passing certain sponsorship costs to skilled workers. This change aims to address concerns about work-related debt and potential exploitation

How Long Can I Stay?

Your visa can last for up to five years before you need to extend it.  You will need to apply to extend or update your visa when it expires or if you change jobs or employer.

How Long Does the Process take?

You can apply for a Work visa up to three months before the day you are due to start work in the UK.  This date is listed on your Certificate of Sponsorship.

As part of your application, you will also need to prove your identity and provide your documents.
